AWC-1800: Automatic weld controlX-ray system for on-line quality control of welds joining coils. AWC-1800 is primarily used as an automatic warning system against possible risk of production break down caused by inadequate quality of the coil joining part in • continuous annealing lines • rolling plants • inspection lines
For product documentation and product quality assurance coil area weight- or thickness, profiles are measured as well. The AWC-1800 is usually placed in a production line cell right after the welding machine, and measures the mass distribution in a sector covering the weld as well as parts of both coil ends. The measurement system can be fully integrated in line control or line surveillance systems as well as manually operated. Individual limit parameters for more than 10 quality criteria is setup remotely by the user, depending on actual production. These limits are used for warning or alarm signalling.
• Automatic evaluation of weld quality. • Automatic evaluation of coil end quality. • Welding zone profiles, cross and lengthwise. • Characterization of hotspot or voids. • Coil ends and cross profiles.

Measuring principle
AWC-1800 uses high-resolution X-ray transmission to measure area-weight or thickness distribution of metal along a joint between coils. The measurement is contact free and independent of exact positioning of the joint in the measurement position. The X-ray source and the detector are moved as a coupled units along the weld when the measurement is started and data from the scanning is processed and results are automatically evaluated using highly advanced mathematics.
